My Works (so far)

At first, I was only making content for assignments in my English Diploma programme. However, doing those assignments sparked a new light that made me see all sorts of things that I can do with language and information. Since then, I took a special interest in content production and in communication as I learn more about English and language in general. So far, I have created content about a range of topics in various formats.

  • Stress within a SENTENCE (Weak Forms)

    See project

This video is a continuation of my video about stress within a word. This time, I was tasked to make a video about how the placement of stress in a sentence can change the meaning of the sentence. In the video, I went further and explained a feature in the English language called the “weak form”.

    Process

For this video, I incorporated a lot of my own observations regarding the subject matter, which was weak forms. To substantiate my points, I created an example that I thought was able to illustrate my points. In editing the video, I experimented with certain text effects and with the speed of certain parts of my video to demonstrate my points better.

    My Remark(s)

The hardest part for me was in coming up with a good enough example to explain my points and in making a coherent flow that ties together the different pieces of information that I wanted to include. However, I think this can be improved through practice in planning the script and visualising pieces of information through diagrams.

  • Stress within a word: How “content” can be different from “content”

    See project

For an assignment in a class called “Pronunciation and Intonation 2”, I made a video about how stress placement in a word can change the meaning of the word entirely.

    Process

I started my research for the topic by investigating a statement about word stresses from a book that was used as a resource for this particular class.

To do this, I consulted online dictionaries for the accurate pronunciations of a list of words that were used as examples in the book (this list of words became my examples in the video).

I then presented the information that I had acquired in a format that I thought was most appropriate for a video.

    My Remark(s)

At this point, I was more used to creating audio-visual content about English pronunciation. However, I still found it challenging to pack certain parts of the information I wanted to get across, such as how the word stresses can be written to highlight the stressed parts.

  • Schwa (or the ⟨ə⟩ sound) is not what you think it is (maybe)

    See project

This video was submitted as my midterm assignment for Pronunciation and Intonation 1, a mandatory subject of study for students in my programme. My instructor tasked the students with creating a video about vowels in the English language. In the video, I expressed my opinions on the Schwa sound (⟨ə⟩) and argued that the transcription of the open-mid back unrounded vowel (or the ⟨ʌ⟩ sound) might be an unnecessary distinction in American English.

    Process

Before being given the assignment, I already had my own observations regarding how in American English, the ⟨ʌ⟩ sound seemed to be produced in a suspiciously similar fashion to how the ⟨ə⟩ sound is produced. I then came across a video by Dr. Geoff Lindsay and it convinced me that there was something worth exploring about it. In the video, I laid out the result of my further research and gave examples to corroborate my arguments.

    My Remark(s)

As this was my first time making any kind of argument regarding a particular aspect of a language, this proved to be difficult for me. On top of that, I had never really made anything for public consumption so I had the added challenge of making a content that is easily understood and also engaging. Despite the challenges, I enjoyed the whole process and discovered that I also find video editing a very rewarding activity.

  • [News Script] Indonesia’s Constitutional Court’s decision on election dispute case

    See project

This was a mid-term assignment for a subject of study called “Presenting”. Here students were assessed on how well they can present the news and prepare their own news script. For this assignment, I was assigned to cover political news.

    The Script
News script: Indonesia's Constitutional Court's decision on election dispute case

    Process

For the research, I utilised primary as well as secondary sources. I had access to a library of resources such as the series of hearings that were livestreamed on the Constitutional Court’s official YouTube channel as well as the Court’s decision that was released to the public a day after the decision was read. For my secondary sources, I resorted to news articles from various news websites about the event.

    My Remark(s)

The research was a strenuous process and I admit that I still need a lot more practice to become good at it. However, I still enjoyed the process because I learned a lot of things, most importantly in reading primary resources and in prioritising certain parts of a story to create news that is comprehensive and understandable.

  • [News Article] Indonesia to tackle the rise of obesity cases through treatment and prevention programs

    See project

For a class called “Correspondence for Mass Media”, my classmates and I had an assignment of writing a news article along with a cover letter to the editor of a news agency. I wanted to produce an article that is of interest to English speakers from sources that were originally written in Indonesian.

    The Article

    Process

I scoured the internet for news articles and official statements made by relevant people and institutions. I then noted important points and constructed an article in a format that might be more familiar to English-speaking audiences.

    My Remark(s)

My research and critical thinking skills were certainly challenged through this assignment as I learned how to look for important information and connect the dots. I also learned how to pack information into a format that is more suitable for certain audiences.

  • [Video Reportage] July 4 said to be one of the hottest days on record

    See project

In a class called “Journalism”, I was tasked with making a reportage video on a recent newsworthy event. At that time, there was an interesting phenomenon that wasn’t largely talked about in relation to the circumstances in Indonesia. I decided to develop a coverage that connected a nearby situation to a larger narrative.

    Process

I chiefly used secondary sources like news articles that talk about the phenomenon and the events surrounding it. In addition to that, I also employed primary sources such as information and statements from Indonesia’s Meteorology Agency (BMKG). I connected these pieces of information and then packed it into news that I believed to be more relevant for a certain type of audience, which were people who are interested in things that are happening in Indonesia.

During the filming process, I encountered problems such as noisy background sounds and the way I presented the news. I think these problems were due to my lack of experience in delivering spoken information.

    My Remark(s)

I particularly enjoyed the research process as well as figuring out patterns and possibilities with the information I came across. Not only did it challenge my abilities in finding the right sources, but it also trained my skills in relating seemingly unrelated pieces of information to each other to create an interesting narrative.

In the post-production process, I also learned how to deal with situations that are less-than-ideal (in this case, I opted to add closed captions to solve the audio issue).

… and more things coming soon.
